About Us

Who is Women Overland

Women Overland is a small business that is part of a larger community. A lot of women are involved, whether as technical experts, guides, or simply friends and supporters. Collectively we have a huge range of skills, attributes, experiences and perspectives.

Women Overland was established by Wendy Stuart. Wendy's previous life was in environmental planning and community-based environmental management (and bushwalking!).

Our Environmental Code

Human societies, through our consumption of resources and production of wastes, are pushing the very limits of the earth’s ability to sustain us. Women Overland also has an impact on the natural world. Amongst other things, we visit places that are the habitat of other species, we drive a big vehicle, and we encourage people to travel half way around the world to travel with us. We feel, however, that it is important to experience, and encourage others to experience, and learn from our natural world. We want to celebrate a world that sustains us and the beautiful places around us that nourish our souls.

It is therefore the aim of Women Overland to operate in such a way as to have a net beneficial environmental impact. This is not easy and we are always looking for new ways to reduce our impact. We apply standards such as Minimal Impact Bushwalking which concerns such things as the use of fuel and how far to camp away from waterways. We also try to minimise our transport and packaging needs by reusing packaging and buying local bulk products. Naturally, most of our food is organic and locally produced.

The main way that we reduce our impact is by off-setting our greenhouse emissions. We do this by calculating the number of trees that need to be planted and maintained to off-set our carbon emissions. The estimate of our carbon emissions includes those that are the result of the use of our vehicle and office activities, as well as any domestic and international transport that we or our clients use in relation to our trips. We estimate our total emissions and then add on a bit - in attempt to make our impact a beneficial one. In Australia a carbon-offset scheme is operated by the non-profit organisation Greenfleet.
