Rainforest and Beaches Overland
Sydney to Brisbane - 11 days

On this trip we follow a similar route to our Rainforests and Beaches Mini Trip, with a few extra days to see and do a bit more: We spend more time in the World Heritage rainforests around Dorrigo and an extra day at laid-back Byron Bay. We also travel along the Great Dividing Range and explore Bald Rock, Australia's second largest rock (after Uluru). Around Bald Rock is a good place to see the elusive Platypus and Koala as well as large mobs of Kangaroos. This is the trip for those who want to explore this fabulous region in more detail.

Itinerary

Day 1
The trip starts with a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. We will stay overnight at the seaside suburb of Bondi, which has beautiful beaches and great restaurants).

Day 2
After a leisurely morning (ie. breakfast on Bondi Beach Esplanade!) we will leave Sydney and travel through the sandstone country of Ku-ring Gai and Brisbane Waters and onto Myall Lakes National Park. Myall Lakes is a large system of tranquil coastal lakes, and a haven for water birds. The lakes system is internationally recognised for its importance to migratory birds and for its vegetation diversity. Fringing much of the wetlands are the peculiar Paper-Bark trees. Old Man Banksias, Scribbly Gums and Casuarinas also give the place an extraordinary feel.

Day 3 to 5
We will travel along the coast and head up the range through the subtropical rainforests of Dorrigo National Park. We will stay three nights near Dorrigo as a base to explore the waterfalls and World Heritage rainforests of Dorrigo and New England National Parks.

New England National Park is located on the basalt cliffs of the Great Escarpment, the result of a series of lava flows about 18 million years ago. The region has incredible diversity, with Snow Gum woodlands occurring on the plateau and subtropical rainforests in the lower sections. The Park also contains forests of Antarctic beech, a remnant from when Australia was a part of the supercontinent Gondwanaland. This land forms part of the countries of the Gumbaynaggir and Djungutti peoples.

Day 6 and 7
From the escarpment we head up to the Great Dividing Range, Australia’s ancient and massive mountain range that travels almost the length of the continent’s east coast. On our way north we will visit Wollomombi Falls, home to Brush-tailed Rock Wallabies and stop at Thunderbolt’s Cave, a refuge of the famed bushranger. We travel through granite country to visit Bald Rock and Boonoo Boonoo National Parks.

Bald Rock is Australia's second largest rock (after Uluru) - 750 metres long, 500 metres wide and 200 metres high. The National Park is full of huge granite formations, sculptured by the elements over millions of years. Wildlife abounds in this region, with rich birdlife and kangaroos active during the day and at dusk Platypus can be seen in the creeks.

Day 8
After a leisurely morning we will travel back down the range, through the Northern Rivers region to the coast. En route we will stop at some remnants of the Big Scrub, the lowland rainforest that once covered vast areas of the Northern Rivers. Much of these forests have been cleared over the past two hundred years, however pockets remain as refuge for rare plant and animal species. Thousand of Fruit Bats occur in some rainforests, and koalas and the elusive platypus are also common in other habitats. We will stop for lunch and wander around the laid-back and colourful Channon Markets. In the afternoon we will arrive in beautiful Byron Bay.

Day 9
There are plenty of things to do in Byron: take a surf lesson, sea kayak with dolphins, SCUBA dive, snorkel, walk through coastal rainforests, yoga, massage . . . or just laze on the beach. Today ia a free day to enjoy Byron as you choose.

Day 10

We travel north through the caldera of Wollumbin, an ancient and sacred volcano. Extinct for the past 20 million years, Wollumbin's caldera is the largest in the southern hemisphere and its formation and erosion contributes to the region’s incredible habitat diversity. Tonight we will have a celebratory final dinner.

Day 11
The trip finishes after breakfast in Brisbane's subtopical Botanical Gardens.
